End Game

I have not done much blogging since the Penguins lost to the Canadiens three weeks ago. The NBA boycott of the past three days has gotten me to think about a few things. The boycott started because Jacob Blake, a citizen who shot seven times by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Sunday. The Milwaukee Bucks were supposed to play the Orlando Magic on Wednesday but decided to stay in the locker room. The three NBA playoff games were postponed on Wednesday and three more were postponed on Thursday.

The main focus of the NBA bubble was to fight social injustice. Wearing Black Lives Matter and kneeling during the national anthem made a statement. However, they wanted to do more than that by focusing on police brutality, race discrimination, and voter suppression. They felt a boycott would bring focus attention on these issues. There was some concern about the season-ending without a championship being won.

Other sports leagues followed the NBA led with the WNBA cancelling their games on Wednesday and Thursday. MLB had cancelled 3 games on Wednesday and 7 games on Thursday. The NHL cancelled Stanley Cup Playoff games on Thursday and Friday. The NBA and NHL will be back with their playoff games on Saturday, and the WNBA came back tonight.

These NBA players risked everything a season and billions of dollars to fight for social justice. The other sports leagues should be commended for risking games, paychecks, and a championship for the right reasons. For the NBA players, what is the end game? It means speaking to the owners who in turn speaking to those who make the laws on a local, state, and federal level. It also means trying to get more people to vote in the 2020 election. All NBA arenas will be voting places for the 2020 Presidental Elections and do it deal ing with COVID-19. The WNBA also talked about these issues and filling out the 2020 census to help communities to get funding.

Several NFL teams cancelled practice in the past three days. They wanted to reflect and make statements on these issues. Could several NFL stars sit out a regular-season game as a form of protest?
