The year 2020 was testing people's willingness to discuss serious issues like social justice. Mental health was another issue and during the Summer Olympics, one athlete was dealing it in front of the world. Simone Biles was supposed to be winning multiple gold medals in gymnastics. Biles had a tough landing on the vault during practice for the team competition. Biles was dropping out of the team and all-around competitions. The United States would get a silver medal in the team competition. Biles would return for the balance beam and getting a bronze medal.
Biles was dealing with the twisties and it is a mental block in which a gymnast is losing focus while in the air. Biles could have a career-ending injury if she has one bad landing. She was protecting her mental health, and got support from other athletes. Biles was also dealing with the death of her aunt and the only active gymnast who was suffering sexual assault at the hands of former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar. Nassar, is currently in a Michigan prison serving a life sentence for sexually assaulting other gymnasts and Michigan State University athletes.
Biles and tennis star Naomi Osaka was earning respect talking about mental health. This is one issue that anyone would be suffering from unless someone would be asking how are you doing.
